Spatial light modulators (SLMs) projection displays composed of a polymer-dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) film and a Bi12SiO20 photoconductor are presented and discussed. This device has several advantages including the absence of polarizer, a low optical loss, and video-rate operation. The device was designed using an electrical-image method and was incorporated into a Schlieren system providing high contrast video images and a high luminous flux.
