Soliton amplification and transmission with Er3+-doped fibre repeater pumped by GaInAsP laser diode

Abstract

Optical solitons in 1.5μm dispersion-shifted optical fibres have been successfully amplified and transmitted over 30-50 km with an Er3+-doped single-mode fibre repeater. The Er repeater was pumped by a GaInAsP Fabry-Perot-type, high-power laser diode, and a gain as high as 10 dB was obtained in the soliton power regime for an Er pump power of 50 mW.
