Abstract
Approximate analytical solutions were obtained for the problem of the unidirectional solidification rate of a pure metal, considering the triple steps of heat resistance; those in the solid and mould and at the interface, using the concept of effective mean surface temperature. The relation among the variables involved is summarised as a function of three dimensionless numbers. The existing solutions of single-resistance and double-resistance models can be interpreted as extreme cases of the triple-resistance model. The function or its chart presents a basis of selection of the appropriate model for a given condition.
