Abstract

The ion-cyclotron instabilities in a collisionless magnetoplasma are observed to be stabilized by a perpendicular plasma flow shear independently of the sign of the shear. This suppression of the ion-cyclotron instabilities is caused only when the perpendicular flow shear exists outside the disk electrode which excites the instabilities by applying a positive bias voltage to it. This phenomenon can be explained by the excitation mechanism of ion-cyclotron instabilities such as potential driven model.
