SEM Observation of the Initial Stage of the Incubation Period of Vibratory Cavitation Erosion

Abstract

The behavior during the initial incubation period of vibratory cavitation erosion tests of a typical machinery material of 304 stainless steel was investigated under a specified condition of uniform nuclei size distribution, using a scanning electron microscope and a profilometer. We observed two types of erosion pits and plastically developed surface undulations. Pits of the first type developed along especially weak lines and often rapidly united together, resulting in marked erosion. Those of the second type randomly distributed in space, and the undulations dominantly affected the roughness of the eroded surface.
