Self-diffusion of manganese in al-pd-mn icosahedral quasicrystals

    Abstract

    Self-diffusion of54Mn in Al72Pd20Mn8icosahedral quasicrystals has been investigated over the temperature range from 723 to 1022 K. Concentration depth profiles of the radioisotope54Mn in the Al-Pd-Mn quasicrystals and crystals have been measured by an ion-beam sputter-sectioning technique. The temperature dependence of the self-diffusivity of Mn in Al72Pd20Mn8icosahedral quasicrystals is expressed as (Formula Presented)The self-diffusivity of Mn in Al72Pd20Mn8icosahedral quasicrystals is about two orders of magnitude smaller than that in Al60Pd25Mn15 crystalline alloys. The self- diffusivity of Mn in the quasicrystals is also three to four orders of magnitude lower than Mn diffusivity in crystalline Al.
