Abstract

Two weather patterns are associated with cool summers in northern Japan. The first is characterised by severe below normal temperatures on the Pacific Coast and at lower altitudes. The second affects all Tohoku and higher areas. The first pattern has a 40 yr periodicity; the second was common in the 1890s and 1960s.-M.J.Haigh
