Seasonal variations of catecholamine levels in the tissues of the Japanese oyster, Crassostrea gigas

Abstract

1. 1. The present study was undertaken to investigate seasonal changes of endogenous catecholamine levels in the tissues of Crassoslrea gigas using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). 2. 2. There were no significant differences between endogenous dopamine and noradrenaline levels in the male and those in the female. 3. 3. Almost no seasonal changes of both catecholamine levels in the gill were observed. 4. 4. Catecholamine levels in the gonad showed the lowest value during the active spawning period in summer. After spawning, those levels increased and the tendency to increase persisted through the fattening period in winter. 5. 5. These results suggest that the seasonal variations of catecholamine levels in C. gigas are concerned with the reproductive cycle, and the authors discuss the relationship between water temperature changes and the catecholamine level.
