Abstract

The Kitakami River Mouth is one of the coastal areas got damaged directly by the 2011 Tohoku Tsunami. The destruction was overwhelming that made the sandspit in front of the river mouth vanish and only narrow strip of sediment stuck on the right bank remain. The subsequent recovery of the sandspit has operated rather slowly since after the tsunami till now. During the recovery process, the intrusion of sandspit into the river mouth occurred due to the water depth change in the nearshore zone taken place by land subsidence and less available sediment supply from surrounding areas. This study, by utilizing multiple imagery sources including aerial photographs and satellite images, examines the morphology change of the Kitakami River Mouth prior and post Tsunami thoroughly. Some characteristics of the river mouth are also investigated to testify the phenomenon in this area.
