Abstract

Forty-nine progressive muscular dystrophy (PMD) patients were examined. Out of these patients, 24 had open-bite in their dental occlusion. The dentoskeletal constructions of 12 patients out of the 24 with open-bite were morphologically analysed using the roentgen-cephalometric method. The results were as follows: one case was caused by maxillary and mandibular deformities and dental malposition, 5 cases were caused by deformities of the maxilla and 5 by deformities of the mandible. The remaining case was caused by dental malposition only. In the case of Kugelberg-Welander disease with open-bite, only dental malposition, not skeletal deformity, was observed.
