The system of risk management of chemical substances in Japan has been drastically changed in these years due to the introduction of the Pollutant Release and Transfer Register (PRTR) system. The system of PRTR will provide various kinds of pollutant release and transfer data of chemical substances, so that they can be used for the estimation of emission to the environment. In addition, it will make possible for peoples to conduct more transparent communication and mutual understanding of risks of chemical substances. In order to develop the risk assessment system, we have studied the methodologies of exposure and risk assessment for chemical substances. This paper shows the overview of the research on the methodologies and the development of models for exposure and risk assessment and the use of the emission data obtained from the PRTR system.
