The present paper deals with a new type of copolymerization. An aromatic dialdehyde of o-phthalaldehyde has been investigated. In this case, o-phthaladehyde behaved differently depending upon the nature of a cyclic phosphonite employed. It has been found that the combination of salicylyl phosphonite and o-phthalaldehyde produces 1:1 alternating copolymer having both ring-opened and ring-closed unit structures.
