Abstract
The retiming dynamics of ultrashort pulses inside a modelocked semiconductor laser were determined experimentally and compared to theory. The characteristic time constant governing the rate at which mistimed pulses recovered to their equilibrium positions after a temporal displacement of the amplitude modulation envelope was 25 ns. The phase noise power spectrum of the modelocked semiconductor laser was shown to be consistent with the retiming time constant.
