Response of a germanium detector to energetic heavy ions

Abstract

We propose to employ a germanium detector as a compact and convenient energy detector for beam diagnostics at RIKEN RIBF, and have studied its response to the energetic heavy ions, 108 MeV/A 14N, 95 MeV/A 40Ar, and 46 MeV/A 86Kr. Reasonably good energy resolutions have been observed for lighter particles, making the use of germanium detectors feasible, but their application to heavier particles is found to be rather limited.
