This paper describes our efforts and strategies for developing sensing technologies within the framework of multimedia telecommunication services. First, I describe sensing technologies used as interfaces for telecommunications, then I describe ones for constructing, maintaining, and operating of telecommunication infrastructure equipment. Our final research and development final goals are first to develop microsystems having sensors, actuators, signal-processing/information-processing circuits, and memories ; second is to develop intelligent sensors like human sense organs ;and third is to develop control systems for a large number of different sensors connected to each other through a telecommunication network. This will lead to a Sensor-Communication Society that is realized by combining sensing systems with telecommunications. We believe this trend will contribute to preserving the global environment, supporting an increasingly aging society, and spreading the welfare society, as well as creating new business opportunities.
