Refractive index engineering of polymer by dispersing titanium dioxide nanoparticles

Abstract

Many optical application fields of polymers exist by increasing their refractive indices. To realize high refractive index polymer, TiO2 nanoparticles were mixed to epoxy polymer. TiO2 nanoparticle surface was treated with silane coupling agent, 2-(3,4-epoxycyclohexyl) ethyltrimethoxysilane to make chemical bonds between TiO2 and epoxy polymer. Thus, it became possible to introduce high concentration TiO 2 nanoparticle into the polymer. The refractive index of this nanocomposite reached 1.9 without significant reduction of its transparency.
