Refractive index engineering of polymer by dispersing nanoparticles (2)

By increasing the refractive indices of polymer their possibility to optical application will expand. We treated the surface of TiO 2 nanoparticles with silane coupling agent: 2-(3,4-epoxycyclohexyl) ethyltrimethoxysilane to make chemical bonds between TiO 2 and epoxy polymer. Thus it was possible to introduce TiO 2 nanoparticles into transparent epoxy polymer. The refractive index of obtained nanocomposites went up to 1.8 by controlling the amount of silane coupling agent. We have also tried to develop refractive index of nanocomposites by forming single molecule layer of coupling agent on TiO 2 surface.
