Abstract

Active control of wavelength of the velocity fluctuation pattern along the spanwise direction in the flow over a cavity using thin piezo-ceramic actuator pieces is tried out. The aim of the flow control is to reduce the aerodynamic noise coining out from the cavity. Eight actuator pieces attached at the upstream-edge of the cavity are used in the laminar boundary layer case, and four pieces are used in the turbulent boundary layer case. Judging from the velocity fluctuation patterns obtained by the hotwire measurements, it is shown that this system is capable of controlling the flow field structure. In addition, the dominant noise generated at the cavity is successfully reduced in both, laminar and turbulent boundary layer case.
