Recycle of ZR metal from hull wastes by treatment of chlorination and metalization

Abstract

Recovery of zirconium (Zr) metal from hull wastes by chlorination reaction treatment was analyzed. It was observed that decontamination factors (DF) of elements in the zirconium alloy, Zircaloy-2, can be achieved by the chlorination treatment. It was found that addition of cobalt and nickel chlorides in the refined distillation was effective in order to obtain decontaminated products without radioactivity. It was also observed that amount of chemical addition was only 0.001 wt% of Zr metal.
