Abstract

Equal channel angular pressed Al-Zr alloy during friction stir welding was investigated. The effect of Zr on reduction of hardness and microstructure on the weld was studied. The addition of Zr to Al suppressed dynamic recovery in the thermodynamically affected zone and enabled retention of the high hardness throughout the weld.
