Abstract
Although the β2→γ2′(orthorhombic) martensitic transformation in a Au-47.5at%Cd alloy is well-established, the characteristics of the unique β2→ζ2′(trigonal) martensitic transformation in Au-Cd alloys with near equiatomic composition was not known until recently. However, most of the characteristics associated with the latter such as the crystal structure of the martensite, phonon softening, crystallography of the transformation, the shape memory effect, superelasticity etc. have recently been solved. These are extensively discussed in the present paper. Although the rubber-like behavior remains unsolved, this will also be discussed from various aspects.
