Rapid synthesis of high densified single phase ceramic Gd2Zr2O7 by spark plasma sintering

The high densified single phase ceramics Gd2Zr2O7 have been successfully manufactured by spark plasma sintering (SPS) for the first time. The effects of sintering temperature and holding time on the phase and microstructure were investigated in detail. The XRD studies reveal that the Gd2Zr2O7 ceramics with a single phase can be obtained at 1700 °C beyond 3 min, and the intensity is found to increase with increasing holding time. From the fracture surface observation and density measurement, the SPS processed samples have higher densities than conventional one. This work offers a novel approach to a high densified single phase ceramic Gd2Zr2O7 in a much shorter time.
