Radiation belt monitoring and forecast in Japan

Abstract

Highly energetic electrons in the outer radiation belt disappear during the main phase of the magnetic storm, and are rebuilt during the recovery phase of the magnetic storm. Increase is caused by the supply of intermediate-energy electrons by the substorms and these seed electrons are accelerated internally up to the MeV energy. Integration of the magnetic activity index is a good proxy for the increase of the flux of MeV electrons not only at the geostationary orbit altitude but also in the outer radiation belt. We discuss the efforts for forecasting MeV electron content in the outer radiation belt. We demonstrate the future satellite program in which the radiation particle monitors will be installed.
