Quasicrystal strengthened Mg-Zn-Y alloys by extrusion

The microstructure and strength of quasicrystal containing alloys Mg95Zn4.2Y0.8 (Alloy 1) and Mg92.5Zn6.4Y1.06 (Alloy 2) was studied after extrusion at 523 K. It was found that the icosahedral phase particles act as strong pinning centres for grain boundaries and dislocations. Precipitation of ternary phase τ1 and long β1 phase rods occurs, imparting good deformation behavior at 473 K.
