Abstract

The compound, coherent and resonant states in the lowest level of the bilayer quantum Hall system are examined. Quantum coherence develops spontaneously in bilayer quantum Hall systems when the Coulomb exchange energy is dominant. A distinct transition exists between the coherent and the resonant phase due to the excitation of different types of skyrmions in the two phases.
