Quadrupolar effects in TmTe

Abstract

Magnetic susceptibility, elastic constant, magnetization and specific heat measurements were performed on single crystal TmTe. All of these properties are explained by considering the quadrupolar effect due to the crystal field split Γ8 state. We also observed a phase transition at 1.7 K in specific heat and elastic constant measurements, which is expected to be quadrupolar ordering of the Γ8 ground state.
