Abstract
In order to examine the quadrupolar effect in heavy rare-earth compounds HoB6 and DyB6, we have measured the elastic constants in magnetic fields by the ultrasonic method. The transverse C44 mode of both compounds exhibits huge softening following as C44 = C440(T-Tc0)/(T-Θ) above the ferro-quadrupolar transition temperature TQ = 30.2 K for DyB6 and TQ = 6.1 K for HoB6. The X-ray measurement of the lattice constant of DyB6 and the magnetic field dependence of C44 in both compounds are also discussed.
