Abstract

Reduction of tantalum chloride (TaCI5) with metallic zinc (Zn) was studied by means of injecting TaCI5 into NaCl-LiCl or LiCl-KCl molten salts together with the carrier gas (Ar) through the injection tube. Experiments were carried out in the temperature range of 673-973K. As the reaction and deposition was limited in the molten salts as a reaction medium, recovery of the product was easier compared with the past study in which gas phase was used as a reaction medium. Tantalum fine powder with primary particle smaller than 1 μm was obtained in any condition. Also the particle was much sintered compared with those from the gas phase reaction.
