Preparation of bioactive calcium pyrophosphate glass-ceramics

Abstract

Calcium pyrophosphate glass-ceramics with the ability to form a chemical bond directly with natural bone having mechanical strength close to that of natural bone was prepared. The glass was pulverized by using alumina mortar, pressed and the compacts heated at 850 - 950° C for three hours. The bending strengths of glass-ceramics heated at 850 - 950° C was 100 - 120 MPa and that heated at 950° C was ≅80 MPa. Pores in the sample prepared by heating at 950° C were smaller in number and larger in size than those in 850° C. A hot pressing technique eliminated the pores, improved bending strength and increased relative density.
