Abstract

The paper reports on a study to construct a comprehensive kinetic model to predict the substrate concentration profile along the axial distance of column in unsteady state. The model consists basically of the following three submodels: a biofilm kinetic submodel to express the relationship between the intrabiofilm mass transfer resistance and the simultaneous intrinsic consumption of substrate; a fluid flow pattern submodel which describes the hydraulic behavior of bulk liquid in the reactor; a fluidization submodel which describes the mechanical characteristics of bioparticles fluidization. The validity of the combined model in conjunction with parameters estimated from each submodel was verified for the prediction of system performance in unsteady state.
