Porous microneedle electrodes for the electrochemical sensing on skin

Abstract

We report the fabrication of a porous microneedle electrode array whose outer and inner surfaces are coated with gold by electroless plating on a polymer material and its application to glucose sensing. The porous structure leads to a large surface area and therefore, the electrode could interface efficiently with interstitial fluid of skin. The prototype microneedle sensor was fabricated by modifying the microneedle electrode with glucose oxidase, which showed linear and sensitive amperometric response to glucose in solution. The gold-plated porous microneedles are potentially useful for the sensing of various molecules in interstitial fluid of skin.
