Polarized Raman-scattering study of Ge and Sn-filled CoSb 3

Abstract

Raman spectroscopic study of polycrystalline Ge and Sn-filled CoSb 3 was discussed. Raman scattering was performed using a Dilor 500 mm triple-grating spectrometer in a subtractive mode. The results show that Raman spectra of the Sn-filled specimens are shifted and broadened as compared to CoSn 3 mainly due to strong interaction of the Sn rattling atoms with Sb vibrational mode. It was also found that Ge does not rattle in the voids of the skutterudite structure as does Sn.
