Polarization anisotropies in quantum wells

Abstract

Three mechanisms are discussed which can cause a dependence of the optical absorption on the direction of the polarization vector in the plane of a quantum well (QW), i.e. the warping distortion, strain, and anisotropic scattering potentials. Measured optical anisotropies do not constitute proof of quantum-wire or lateral superlattice formation.
