Photopatterning and visualization of adsorbed monolayers of bis(1-benzyl-4-pyridinio)ethylene moieties

Photopatterning of adsorbed monolayers using photopolymerizable cationic adsorbate that undergoes stepwise UV-induced polymerization was demonstrated. The tetracation, 1,1′-[1,4-phenylenebis(methylene)]bis{4-[2-(1-benzyl-4 -pyridinio)ethynyl]pyridinium} chloride was adsorbed on a silica plate from its aqueous solution through electrostatic interaction, and site-selective electrostatic assembly of nanometer-scale colloidal silica particles on patterned monolayers. The technique uses a conventional light source, and the development of the photolithographic pattern is environment-friendly as it involves only aqueous solutions.
