Photoemission Study of Valence Fluctuation in Yb4Sb3 and Yb4Bi3

Abstract

Ultraviolet photoemission spectra of single crystal Yb4Sb3 and Yb4Bi3 have shown the valence fluctuation with appreciable density of divalent Yb 4f states at the Fermi level (EF). The contribution of the surface states in the Yb 4f photoemission region is confirmed. The remarkable asymmetry of each of the d5/2 and d3/2 component of Sb 4d and Bi 5d core levels has revealed a strong contribution of Sb 5p and Bi 6p states at EF. The absorption spectrum and the photon energy dependence of the photoionization cross section are evaluated between 35 and 120 eV from the constant final state and constant initial state spectra.
