Photocontrol of polypeptide conformation

Abstract

Five copolypeptide series containing azobenzene groups in their side-chains were prepared in order toinvestigate the effect of photoisomerization of the side-chain azobenzenc groups on the polypeptide conformations. It was found by circular dichroism (CD) measurements that conformational changes such as lefthanded (LH) helix→right-handed (RH) helix, LH helix→random coil and random coil→RH helix are inducedby photoirradiation. It was also found that a copolymer which undergoes a solvent-induced RH helix→LHhelix→random coil transition exhibits remarkable dependency of its photoresponsive behavior on the solventcomposition. There seemed no general relation between the main-chain helical sense and, the sign of the side-chain CD band for the five copolymer series.
