Phase relation of Sni-Fe-V alloys around the compound Sm3(Fe,V)29

Phase relations in thé Sm-Fe-V system, especially around the compound Sm3(Fe,V)29, have been studied. Isothermal sections of the iron-rich corner of the Sm-Fe-V system were constructed from X-ray diffraction studies and microstructural observations. α-(Fe,V), γ-(Fe.V), Sm2(Fe,V)17, Sm(Fe,V)12 and liquid phases are present near the Sm3(Fe,V)29 compound after annealing at 1100°C. However, nearly single phase Sm3(Fe,V)29 can be obtained with an alloy of composition Sm9.5Fe83.5V7. The solid solubility of Sm in Sm3Fe.V)29 compound is very small, but that of V is in the range 5.6 at% to 9.2 at%. The liquid phase region expands to the lower V content with increasing annealing temperature, leading to a decreasing V content in the Sm(Fe,V)12 compound at high temperature.
