Parametric soliton laser

Abstract

A novel soliton laser using stimulated (or parametric) four-photon mixing, the parametric soliton laser (PSL), is described. The operation of the laser is discussed. To achieve a coherent amplification for the long fiber, it is necessary to achieve phase matching while keeping the frequency shift between the Stokes and the anti-Stokes carriers as small as possible. This condition is achieved by phase matching near the zero group velocity dispersion wavelength. An autocorrelation trace of the PSL output, its spectrum, and the pump power dependence of the Stokes and anti-Stokes wavelengths are shown and discussed. The quality of the soliton pulse can be improved by inserting a bandpass filter that only passes the Stokes component.
