Overview of 2011 tohoku earthquake and structural damage

    Abstract

    The paper describes firstly the overview of the earthquake and tsunamis. Then, the observed ground motion characteristics are addressed. Features of structural damage by shaking will be provided in relation to ground motion characteristics with long duration. The damage in some area is addressed from the view point of the damaged area due to past earthquakes such as 1978 Miyagi-ken Oki earthquake. Regarding structural damage due to tsunamis, the tsunami load investigation based on the damage survey is also discussed from. Finally some aspects of lessons from the earthquake and tsunami are addressed.
