N2 - It has previously been shown that the introduction of exchange coupling can improve the S/N ratio in perpendicular recording media. In this paper, micromagnetic simulations with random microstructures were used to determine the optimum values of exchange coupling, A, for perpendicular media with a range of saturation magnetisation values. The anisotropy field, Hk, was fixed at 8 kOe whilst Ms and Ku were varied. The media were 200 Å thick and the easy axes were randomly dispersed from the perpendicular according to a Gaussian distribution with a half-width of 6°.
