The authors present necessary and sufficient conditions for asymptotic stability of 2-D state-space digital filters. A general formulation based on this new condition is presented for optimal design of 2-D recursive digital filters with specified input-output characteristics. The formulation has the advantage that it can be reduced to an unconstrained minimization problem and the resulting filters are guaranteed to be not only stable but also limit-cycle-free. An embodied design method for given spatial domain specifications is proposed, using the general formulation. An example shows the effectiveness of the proposed method.
