Optical properties of tetravalent uranium complexes in non-aqueous media

Abstract

We study photo-physical behaviors of tetravalent uranium halides such as UF4, UCl4, UBr4 and UI4 to understand the electronic transitions under the unexplored condition such as in non-aqueous media at cryogenic temperature. These complexes exhibit white fluorescence by UV-pulse excitation at λex = 394 nm. The fluorescence lifetimes in organic solvents are shorter than that in ionic liquids in spite of the longer ionic radii between uranium and ligands. Chemical species and the coordination number of UIV in water, in organic solutions, and in ionic liquids are thoroughly different, resulting in a variety of fluorescence spectra and decays.
