Optical gain spectra due to a one-dimensional electron-hole plasma in quantum-wire lasers

Abstract

We report the first measurement of evolutional optical gain spectra for various electron-hole densities in T-shaped quantum-wire lasers with high structural uniformity at 5 K. At the high excitation power, a broad absorption peak and a sharp gain peak are observed instead of discrete excitonic absorption peaks. It indicates that an electron-hole plasma yield the gain of quantum-wire lasers. Additionally, spectral shape of the gain peak is symmetric, and shows no similarity with one-dimensional (1D) density of states. It suggests influence of strong Coulomb correlations in a quantum wire.
