Optical design of high performance OCB mode for high quality field sequential color LCDs

Abstract

A field sequential color LCD using a high contrast OCB-mode liquid crystal and a scanning LED back-light has been developed. We established an evaluation method for a polymerized discotic material compensation film and an optimization method of a bend alignment LC cell. The prototype of OCB mode LCD has a high contrast ratio of 1300:1 and a wide viewing angle over 170deg. In this paper, the concept of evaluation method of PDM compensation film and optical design of field sequential color OCB mode LCD is discussed.
