Abstract
A new’ concept is presented for an optical repeater that can be installed inside an optical fibre cable. This optical cable amplifier enables construction of a terminal-free transmission system. The optical cable amplifier is an erbium amplifier w'hich is specially designed for installation in an optical fibre cable. The optical cable amplifier is mechanically flexible within a radius of 33 cm without any change in the optical gain characteristics. The gain is typically 25 dB and the output power is + 5 dBm.
