A geometrical method is proposed to predict the orientation relationship (OR) between two crystals in a bioystal, including the OR between two neighboring grains in a polycrystal a precipitate in a matrix, and a film on a substrate. To show the applicability of this model 10 films deposited on a substrate, the example of growth of cubic silicon on rhombohedral sapphire is considered. Finally, the physical basis of the method, based on energy minimization of the adatoms on the substrate surface, is discussed.
