Abstract

The energy expression for the Timoshenko beam is a good example in selection of an interpolation function for the finite element method, since the resulting stiffness matrix can be compared with the exact stiffness matrix. This paper discusses this selection of interpolation functions. The energy expression for the Timoshenko beam derived from basic assumptions on kinematic field and energy principles for a three-dimensional elastic continuum is also presented, and is used to clarify the confusion presented in the literature in boundary conditions for the finite element formulation of the Timoshenko beam.
