Observation of the singlet and triplet states in a hybrid vertical-lateral double dot

Abstract

We fabricated a hybrid vertical-lateral double dot and measured the linear and nonlinear single electron transport properties to study a inter-dot tunnel and exchange coupling. The inter-dot tunnel coupling was tunable for a double dot containing just a few electrons with center gate voltage as a parameter. For the large tunnel coupling, we observed an excited state close to the ground state that formed an effective two-electron state in the excitation spectrum, and assigned the ground and excited states to the spin singlet and triplet states, respectively.
