Abstract

Under high energy efficiency operation of blast furnace, it is required to ensure fluent material flow in the furnace because the permeability of the burden materials is known to decline with decrease in reducing agent rate (RAR). Another factor to deteriorate the permeability in the furnace is powder accumulation. In this study physical limitations to material flows, namely fluidization and flooding, are discussed based on the in-furnace distributions obtained by the kinetic-based mathematical simulations. The results shows the decrease in RAR shifts the material flow status toward the limitations through the variation of cohesive zone shape. The powder accumulation in the furnace has severer effect on physical limitations, thus it is preferable to avoid the powder accumulation in the lower part of blast furnace.
