A novel in-gap spin state was induced in La1.85Sr0.15CuO4 by doping Zn. A systematic variation from the spin-gap state to the static spin correlations via the in-gap spin lattice state indicated a competitive coexistence of the superconducting and AF regions in the form of their inhomogeneous mixture.
